There are three frontrunners for Arizona’s United States Senate race in 2024 as of April — Republicans Kari Lake and Mark Lamb and Democrat Ruben Gallego.

The Arizona election ballot on Nov. 5 will include winners of the primary held Aug. 6, 2024. Independent candidates who gather enough signatures will only appear on the general election ballot.

Who: Served in the House of Representatives since 2014 and currently represents Phoenix’s District 3.

Party: Democrat

Snapshot: The son of Latino immigrants and a former Marine Corps member, Gallego has supported human rights for migrants crossing Arizona’s border to seek asylum. He introduced and passed the Native American Child Protection Act to prevent and prosecute child abuse and introduced the Native VetSuccess at Tribal Colleges and Universities Pilot Program Act to provide more government funding for veteran education. Gallego was criticized for taking a trip to Qatar in 2021 paid for by the U.S.-Qatar Business Council. In February 2022, after Russia invaded Ukraine, he called for expelling Russian students from U.S. universities, saying many were the children of wealthy Russians. Gallego has said he supports abortion rights and has promised to fight bans on the procedure.

Kari Lake

Who: Former Republican gubernatorial candidate and television news anchor.

Party: Republican

Snapshot: Lake is aligned with former President Donald Trump and has received his endorsement. She refused to concede her loss in the 2022 gubernatorial election to now-Gov. Katie Hobbs. She filed multiple lawsuits, several of which were defeated, alleging that wrongdoing in election procedures caused her loss. In May 2022, Lake called abortion “the ultimate sin” and told KTAR it should be regulated at the state level. She has since said she does not support a federal ban on abortion, though she hopes women “choose life.” The local TV reporter has never held elected office and says her lack of political experience will shake up the status quo.

Mark Lamb

Who: Pinal County Sheriff since 2016.

Party: Republican

Snapshot: Lamb has emerged as a public persona of far-right politics on the national stage with his support of border militarization, a promise to “stand up to the woke left” and opposition to abortion. He has blamed Biden’s immigration policies for an influx of migrants, and advocated for funding to extend border walls. He refused to enforce COVID-19 quarantine orders in the early days of the pandemic. Lamb has aligned himself with conservative election deniers. He published a book, “American Sheriff: Traditional Values in a Modern World,” and has promoted “Constitutional Sheriff” movements lobbying for local jurisdiction over state and federal laws.
